RIP. Joyce RYERSON. died 30 August 2012, aged 95. The Ryerson Index is a free index to death notices appearing in Australian newspapers. The date range covered extends from the Sydney Gazette of 1803 up to newspapers published within the last week or so. The Index also includes many funeral notices, and some probate notices and obituaries.


THE RYERSON INDEX

The index was named after Joyce Ryerson, who was a member of the Sydney Dead Persons' Society. Her fourteen-year collection of death notices from the Sydney Morning Herald provided the initial material for the index. 2. This valuable genealogical resource is named after Joyce Ryerson, who inadvertently created it when she started compiling death, funeral and obituary notices from the Sydney Morning Herald on a daily basis.

The Sydney Dead Persons Society began indexing death notices in the Sydney newspapers. This project has grown into the Ryerson Index which now (July 2013) indexes death notices and obituaries in 222 newspapers and has over 4,000,000 entries. 1776-1980 - Australia miscellaneous genealogical records : COLLECTION RECORD, 1776-1980 at FamilySearch.

Because the Index was originally created by the Sydney Dead Persons Society, its strength lies in notices from NSW papers - including in excess of one million notices from the Sydney.
